The Snow Mountain Party of a Group of Nobody

The founder of the largest online outdoor equipment shop, the founder of a famous brand, a senior executive of a well-known company, an IT hardware professional, a hacker, a scientist, a professor, a retired senior cadre and so on. Nineteen different people climbed to the top of Haba Snow Mountain together. A birthday party on the top of the mountain and a snow mountain proposal.

As mountain pals and travel pals, we mostly talk about what happened in the mountains. We don’t talk about famous mountains such as Mount Tai, Mount Huang, and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. We talk about Dog Tooth Mountain, Dongling Mountain, Small Wutai, Mount Taibai, Haba Snow Mountain, Jade Bead Snow Mountain, Mount Gongga, Muztagata Mountain, etc.. We talk about the Everest and Chogori sometime too. We are a group of nonprofessionals. We have our own particular identities in the society, but we put them in our dreams when we are at mountains which are more 8000 meters high.

My name is Hutu( ID), the starter of this group. I have over twenty years of outdoor experience and more than a decade of snow mountain climbing experience. My friends and I formed a civilian mountain climbing team after years of exercising, running, training and studying. I want to thank some of my helpers Astro Boy( ID), Snail( ID) and Fangyun( ID)’s company. We only climb snow mountains which altitude are over 5000 meters to 7500 meters. We have climbed over 20 mountains and over 3500 times in total. We have been to most of China and some overseas regions.

We have climbed Haba Snow Mountains more than ten times. I remember one time, the team was composed by nineteen nonprofessionals. There was the founder of the largest Taobao outdoor equipment shop, the founder of a famous brand, a senior executive of a well-known company, an IT hardware professional, a hacker, a scientist, a professor, a retired senior cadre and so on. The age was between 21 years old to 61 years old.

During the National Day in 2013, we gathered in the inn in Lijiang from all over China. The leader group arranged hotels, bought food, checked the equipment, vehicles and such.

Day 2, we had breakfast and calculated equipment then took the car to Haba village. Haba village is a small village at the foot of the Haba Snow Mountain. The villages are surrounded by primal forest. There are twenty-five different ethnics in the villages. It was the last arranging and supply point. The primary mission after we had arrived the village was to take a walk in the primal forest to get used to the air between 2600 to 3000 meters above sea leave.

Day 3, the climbing supplements were carried by horses. We carried our equipment. This day was difficult, and everyone was trying to adapt while climbing to the camp at 4300 meters.

Astro Boy( ID) was the diplomat in the team. He was responsible for dealing with the people who asked for environment protection fee for no reason. He tried to reduce expenditure, he talked too much, and his heart was tired. There were some retired cadres in the team, and his other job was to contact people to carry some of the supplement to the C1 camp at 4900 meters. There were other teams in the camp, and he was responsible for communicating with them as well.

Snail( ID) was the leader in climbing technique. He has over ten years of experience in the outdoor equipment industry. He is super professional in the performance and use of the equipment. The basic climbing skills of the team member were trained by him which included how to wear and use the equipment such as ice slope walking, how to stop when you fall, and how to use ascendeur, figure 8 knot, and cord.

Fangyun( ID)was the support personnel in the team. He was one of the National Flag Guards. At 4300 meters, he cooked stewed beef, shredded meat fried with green pepper, sauteed cabbage with vinegar sauce, fried lettuces and even egg flower soup! It was like magic. Everyone thought he was a cook, but he is a photographer. His photos have won many prizes on outdoor media.

At night, we would have meetings, check equipment, exchange using skills. Over ten people lived in the same cottage. We talked about many things. The most heated topic was how to cook hot, and sour shredded potato is spicier, put the chili in first or at last.

Day 4, we set off. We got up before the sunrise and had breakfast. The public equipment and the people to carry things were ready. Today’s goal was the C1 camp at 4900 meters. It was not hard to climb 600 meters while carrying heavy stuff. When I looked back at 4500 meters, I found Fangyun( ID) was walking with difficulty, and his bag felt heavy. After he had caught up and I asked why. Then I knew he was carrying some equipment for Dingding ( ID). When we arrived at the C1 camp, the wind was strong, and the temperature was low. We set the tent, and we didn’t want to come out after we went inside. Most of the team member hadn’t camped at this kind of high altitude. I was worried some might suffer altitude sickness, but what I worried didn’t happen. This night was short.

Day 5, we got up at four, we had breakfast and wore our equipment. We gathered together and set off. Haba C1 camp is a huge snow slop, and it is easy to fall. We separated into two teams, Astro Boy( ID) and Snail( ID) led the front team with better strength. They needed to set the ice piton and snow piton to stabilize the rope, and they built the road for the second team. At 5200 meters, Dragonfly ( ID) had a health issue, her face was white, lips were purple, and she burned out. I arranged the climbing aids to take her down the mountain and gave up climbing to the top of the mountain. At that time, she was over 180 meters away from the top which is 5396 meters above sea level. She held the ice piton tightly and looked at the top of the mountain which was so close. She retreated with regret. After all those years, in my heart, I still owe her a mountaintop.

At last, the rest eighteen people of the team climbed to the top of Haba Snow Mountain. We sang the birthday song at 5396 meters. Today was the birthday of our team member Buluokong( ID). Then we started to retreat in groups. At that time Fangyun( ID) was feeling unwell because of the exhaustion yesterday. I held him in my arms and slipped down using the ice piton. We collected our equipment at 4900 meters camp, and then at the 4300 meters camp. At last, we went back to the Haba Village at 2600 meters. That night was a carnival, we ate yak meat and drank highland barley wine until we passed out.

Day 6, We went back to the inn in Lijiang.

Day 7,We went back to our life and started different jobs.

After all these years, I still remember that utterly normal Haba Snow Mountain activity clearly. At 2015, I received a wedding invitation from Fangyun( ID) and Dingding( ID).
