——the exclusive interview of Lu Sheng, the ultra-realistic painter

Lu Sheng, male, born in Hainan in 1981, a member of Association of Young Artist. He has been painting for more than a decade, and especially obsessed with ultra-realistic oil painting.

ONE OUTSIDE: Whats ultra-realistic oil painting?

Lu Sheng: Ultra-realism was born and trended in America during the late 1960s to 1970s. Its about recreating a thing or a photo on the canvas objectively and clearly. In the 1980s, China entered the reforming and opening period. Ultra-realism, as a popular way of painting in Europe and America, flooded in China with western culture. Now, most of the famous art colleges have opened ultra-realism painting lesson, and it is one of the main course in training oil painting technique. Ultra-realism has become one of the most essential technique in modern oil painting.

ONE OUTSIDE: When did you start to like the style of ultra-realism?

Lu Sheng: When I started to learn painting, I saw Mr. Luo Zhongllis Father and I was amazed by its delicate touch. I thought it was brilliant how the facial expression of someone on oil painting could be so lively. I was fond of this style since then, and I hoped to be that kind of painter in the future.

ONE OUTSIDE: How do you draw a character?

Lu Sheng: When I draw a portrait, I use the characters facial expression to express the spirit of him. First, I draw the general figure and ratio of the character on the canvas, then I observe the look and features of him and paint his unique qualities. During the painting of the face, I especially heighten through the skin and muscle texture. When I color, first I paint the foundation color, then I paint further during the second time after the foundation is dry, and draw the details little by little. I use the effect of warm and cold hue to show the shade and light to emphasize the three-dimensional sense of the features, which makes the painting look more real and authentic.

ONE OUTSIDE: These are so professional. Now we have cameras, whats the point to paint so real?

Lu Sheng: I think painting is a process of hard-working and discovering, and every expression of painting needs perseverance and elaborate work. What people see is different from how I feel. Painting is tiresome for me, but it makes me happier and enrich. Taking a photo with a camera is work too. But a painter needs solid basic skills, and draw carefully with perseverance. A good painting includes the paintersunderstanding of people.

ONE OUTSIDE: Is there people like realistic paintings now with cameras?

Lu Sheng: This is different. Arts are various and need to be interpreted in different styles. Most importantly, ultra-realistic oil paintings are not just photos, they are arts, which means they can show their creators emotion and understanding of the paintings. Photos cant show this. Every painting expresses its painters understanding and comprehension of an oil painting. It is wrong to think that you dont need ultra-realistic painting when there is a camera.

ONE OUTSIDE: How many people do you think can understand ultra-realistic paintings in modern society?

Lu Sheng: When you stand in front of an outstanding ultra-realistic painting, you dont need to understand oil painting to feel a soul-crushing power. Through layers of paint, it lets us think silently, coldly, and profoundly! Photos cant replace this. For example, with the improvement of peoples living standards, rarely any family hang an over-sized picture at home. But they can hang an ultra-realistic painting. Photos are souvenirs, oil paintings are art.

ONE OUTSIDE: Do you think during creation, ultra-realistic painting requires higher painting skill?

Lu Sheng: I think so. It is a serious, rational, and connected process from choosing a photo, connecting the pattern, drawing the outline, coloring to finishing it. There are many processes from drafting, coloring to adjusting, and you have to be fully concentrated. You need to blend using a bristle brush pen, mix with a small painting knife, smear with your fingers, use a medium brush to paint the painting medium, wipe with a soft cloth, little tricks to smear a large area, and sign, two months pass during the strokes. This is a long and surprising process of creating a painting.

ONE OUTSIDE: What do you think is the most important thing for ultra-realistic painters

Lu Sheng: Thats perseverance and the spirit of a painter. Many people discussed that ultra-realistic painting makes the look too real, and this kind of machine-like painting is pursuing perfection, which is an obsession. But the market approves it, and the paintings are valuable. Those works can live in history.

ONE OUTSIDE: That means you want people to see more of the characters through your painting.

Lu Sheng: Yes, as a painter, I want to find the inner world of the characters I drew. There is a lyric: I can see the mountains and waters in your heart. During painting, I try my best to understand every individuals contents. Thats the true spirit of the works.
