The Photo Introduction Of The Memory Of Mountains

Travel under an invitation.

Under the invitation of my good friend, Mr. Gaoqiang, we took the G-series high-speed train from the Beijing West Station to He' nan Province in the morning of 2018's New Year. Our goal was to take photos of a hundred 100-year-old living war veterans who survived the War of Resistance. One hundred years old multiply a hundred people equal ten thousand. So at that time, we called this project Long Live Veterans! The truth is that I accepted this project because I could not reject it out of gratefulness. Mr. Gao has supported and helped me a lot in my job, so when he offered to do this project, I accepted on the scene without a second thought! ( During my past creation, I didn't want to be involved with the war theme.)

We traveled across eight cities and provinces which were He' nan Province, Sichuan Province, Chongqing City, Taiwan Province, Guangxi Province, Shandong Province, He' nan Province again, Yunnan Province, Guizhou Province and Shandong Province once more. We have traveled ten thousand kilometers and taken photos of 119 veterans who are a hundred years old.

Meet a veteran for the first time.

The first veteran we took photos of was Zhang Dade in He' nan. He lived in a rural area, and there were volunteers. ( Every province we went, there was a group of volunteers who took care of the veterans for a long term without complaining. We took photos of the veteran one by one under their planning and guidance.)

When we met Zhang Dade for the first time, he was lying in his small bed. The room was dim, his skin was dark, and there were wrinkles on his face as same as the bark of a one hundred years old pine tree which looks tough. We didn't hear him speaking.

January of the north is freezing. I set the machines in his yard, prepared a wooden stool against the wall for him. The old man wore a military coat on the outside with only the top button did. He supported himself with a wooden stick in his hands, sat across me quietly and expressionlessly as if all the difficulties he had been experienced is written on his stone-hard face.

Let's try to imagine: 70 years ago during the war, he was a young man who was around 20 years old. How brave were they to face rains of bullets, heavy smokes, burning fires, strong enemies, and fields of bodies at that age? What kind of intense sadness and mighty power filled their hearts? Why did they do that? As decent people, they could have fled, left their home with their families, and hide in rather safe places when they faced the war. The most important thing was to live! That's the most natural thing!

But, when the war came 70 years ago, they chose to charge! They chose to fight against the intruders with their lives! So many people fell, and so many unknown bodies are scattered on the land of China...

How can we forget about them today? How can we forget the ones who sacrificed their lives for the survival of our nation? Veterans who are still alive witnessed that part of history, which is written in their hearts, on their faces, and inside their eyes. I want to use the camera to document for them, us, and our future.

Not long after we took photos of the old man, we received the message that he had passed away.

To shoot the feeling of "the men are still here!"

People have seen photos of old veterans over the years, and most of them are the elderly standing or sitting in front of their homes or beds. They are aged, weak, and the condition of their home are not good, which may be the reality of their retired life. What could we do with the images? What kind of energy do the photos pass on? After thinking carefully, I discussed with Mr. Gao Qiang, and we decided not to take pictures of their living space, we were going to take photos of them! We were going to take pictures of their manly spirit. They fought bravely against the enemy; they had fires in their eyes; they were going to die and live with the country. They are still here today, and their eyes still show the heroic spirit which they had on the battlefield, and the vigorousness and aggressiveness because they were not afraid to die and die with the enemy. I want to express this spirit which only the Chinese men at that time have. I want the faces, and eyes show this kind of positive energy. Because I think China needs this spirit, feeling, and power now. I said to Mr. Gao without thinking, "the men are still here!"

Closeup, color, quality

We were going to avoid the big scene and details of life, and take photos of people! We were going to show the vigorous spirit which the veterans still have! I focused my lens on the faces of the old men who are a hundred years old. Though time has brought wrinkles on their faces, you still can taste the one hundred flavors of life through their deep eyes. I hope the images are simple, and everything unnecessary is supererogatory. I hope the camera language is powerful so that it can turn complexity into simplicity, and less can beat more, and let the audiences feel the history, read the past time and gain power from their faces and eyes!

Most of my past exhibitions were black-and-white because I like the simplicity, unpretentious, abstraction, conclusiveness, poetic spirit, and power of black-and-white. But this time, I wanted to use color( color and black-and-white) because the faces of the old men are colorful, the time has left heaviness, vicissitude, and richness on their faces!

I will never stop pursuing quality. I used a Hasselblad 120 medium format camera, and positive slid film and negative black-and-white film. Hopefully, the photos will not lose quality when they are enlarged.

Exhibition

This year is the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic of China, and we planned to exhibit the photos in September and throughout the National Holiday. We hope to make the exhibition abundant, right, and astonishing because we will not forget that part of history, we will not forget the hero who fought on the battleground and bled on the land of our country for the survival of our state and nation!

Long live veterans!

I hope you are healthy!

Solute to you!
