Overlooking the Silk Road is a Large-scale Aerial Movie Which is Filmed by Helicopters

Director is Rongyan Liu

Director Rongyan Liu has filmed over 20 special movies, and she is the director who filmed the most kinds of special movies in the world. She is good at early stage technologies and after effects. She is a tech geek. During creation, she can change her brilliant ideas into camera language. She also likes to use new technologies into special movies. She dares to innovate, and most of her movies are about outdoor events.

The director and her crew are filming large-scale aerial movie—— Overlooking the Silk Road. This movie tells the past, present, and future of the silk road from overlooking view. This is the first movie in the world that filmed by helicopters. It involved 19 provinces of China and over 20 countries. It is a large-scale aerial documentary and 3D IMAX movie that showed how different provinces and different countries cooperate, win-win and development blueprint together with a panoramic filming method. It also showed the history, culture, and life of various provinces and countries. This film will be released globally after finished production.

The early stage of aerial filming started from September 2016. The filming crew tramped over mountains and raced time with seasons. They started to aerial film the fall of five provinces in Northwest China at middle September and finished at the beginning of November. The most difficult part of aerial filming was the weather. The weather controlled this job. There are unavoidable bad weathers in four season. The difference between aerial filming and land filming was there were many conflicts when we were waiting for the approval of flying helicopters according to the weather. And half of our times were waiting at different regions for good weather for aerial filming. We were anxious, but there were nothing we can do. So this was a job that can trim your temper.

All thought there were many difficulties, but most of the can be overcome. The most difficult part was aerial filming in Tibet this year. Tibet is located on the southwest border of China. The north side of Tibet are Xinjiang and Qinghai, the south side is Yunnan and Sichuan, and the northwest side is countries such as Myanmar, India, Nepal, and regions like Kashmir. The borderline at Tibet is about 3842 kilometers long, Tibet is also the important connection between China and other countries and an important trading region at the border of China. One Belt One Road proposed that Tibet played a significant role in the North Silk Road, the Tang-Tibet Road and the Tea Road in history. Tibet is also the portal of China when China communicate with South Asian countries. Tibet is huge and has many things. The places that the filming crew needed to cut to was long. We would learn the road condition before our car set off because the road conditions here were complicated. There were not many gas station on the road, and we would prepare some oxygen and food in our cars.

The filming crew encountered the most difficult situations during our latest filming. We had problems with the approval of aerial filming. We also met the raining season at Tibet, working at high altitude, altitude sickness, dangerous road and broken road. We needed a day to drive 300 kilometers. Everybodys physic condition was different. And the directors altitude sickness was most severe among dozens of people of our filming crew. She could not sleep at night. She started to inhale oxygen since the day we arrived Linzhi. The most unfortunate thing was that she had anaphylaxis during inhaling oxygen when she was filming at the helicopter on the fifth day. The doctor said,The cause is unclear, but it is best not to inhale any oxygen anymore. The temperature difference in Tibet is huge, do not catch a cold. I will prescribe you some Vitamin and Oral Liquid of Rhodiola. You should drink more water and eat more. You need to walk slow and make sure you have enough strength. She already could not sleep at night, and now she had to open the window at night and breath. The director thought she would be defeated and thought about quitting. But she insisted in finish the film. The ultraviolet ray here was strong, and some people in our filming crew was burned. The food here was different as well. All the difficulties could not stop our passion for work. Nobody fell behind.

The geography of Tibet is unique, and Tibet is called the Water Tower of Asia. Tibet gave birth to over 2 billion people in the world, and it is one of the provinces that have rich water resource. We captured many mountains, creeks, rivers, etc. during aerial filming. We also captured a lot of microclimates. The most breathtaking view we ever filmed was at Namjagbrawa. Our helicopter climbed 6600 meters, and our highest height was 7000 meters. We saw the peak of Namjagbrawa, and it was surrounded by clouds. It was marvelous, and it was lucky to see a view such as this. The most thrilling experience was aerial filming Potala Place during sunrise. It was vague and gradually become clear. It was like fantasy but become more and more real. It was solemn. We also recorded many railways, infrastructures such as bridges, all the buildings built by people from all the provinces to help Tibet and the financial trading on One Belt One Road line. The second filming phase in Tibet started in August. We mainly focused on ports, railways, bridges, tunnels, cities, economic situations, lives, mountains, rivers, buildings, etc.

Director said that she loves challenges like this. This is challenging but meaningful. Overlooking the Silk Roads aerial filming plans involves 19 provinces in China and over 20 countries. We already filmed six provinces and cities such as Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu, Sichuan, Yunnan, Tibet at the primary stage. All the cities and provinces have breathtaking views. The way stretches endless ahead, and I shall search heaven and earth. We are doing our best to move ahead. We are still filming from the air and hoping we can present a great movie for the audience.
