Some people care too much about other peoples judgment, so they are living other peoples life; some people give up their glorious future to set their parents mind at rest; some people give their dreams up for their children; some people give up their moral code to improve their life. And there are some people want to be themselves and live in the moment.

Our star today is Cherry, she is a brave, kind, cheerful and outgoing Chengdu girl. She is a parent, but she decides to live freely with her boy.

Erbai: How did you know about diving?

Cherry: I worked for the Electricity Power Bureau after I graduated. A few years later I took a one month vacation because life was boring and went to Ko Tao, Thailand.

Erbai: How did you become a diving coach?

Cherry: I worked another year after I came back from Ko Tao, I already made up my mind. I went to learn diving whenever I had a vacation. The next year, I went to Ko Tao and joined diving instructor's test. Then I resigned and started a new life.

Erbai: You have become a diving instructor since then.

Cherry: I rented a house and started to find jobs. I printed my resume and introduced myself to the owners of diving shops one by one. A few days later, one of the diving shops called me and asked me to teach. I had a steady income gradually.

Erbai: Was there probation time or was the owner would listen while you teach?

Cherry: There wasnt, because I was a part-time diving instructor instead of a full-time one. The first time I teach, the owner took me aside and said, You are a PADI instructor who passed IE, so I believe that you have the professional ability to finish this lesson. I will not listen to your class, and I will not tell the students that this is your first time too. The students in my first class were teenage Americans, and they were challenging. They barely listen to my instructions and their teenage English were unclear. Thankfully, two students were good with water and had good apprehensiveness, and they basically knew how to do it after reading the information once. I was relieved when the parents and students were both pleased after the lesson.

Erbai: There was not many Chinese who learn diving in Ko Tao at that time, right?

Cherry: There were very little Chinese comparing to nowadays. I mainly used English to teach before I came to the Philippines.

Erbai: What did you do when you were pregnant? You could not teach by then, right?

Cherry: Yes, I did not dive during pregnancy. I would help with Chinese diving theory lessons or translate for instructors who only speak English. I went back to China before the due date. The three of us moved to Akaba, Jordan when the baby was three months old because we saw a diving shop was hiring couple instructors online and we never been to the Red Sea or the middle east before and we thought it was cool.

Erbai: How did you take care of your baby when you were working?

Cherry: I would take Max to the diving shop and asked proprietress to look after him if I had to dive. He was a baby who needed nothing but to be fed when the time was up.

Erbai: You went to a completely unfamiliar country and city, what was special about the culture there?

Cherry: Jordan is a Muslim country, but it is not as conservative as Iran and Saudi Arabia, and it is not as open as the United Arab Emirates. We lived in a neighborhood where local people lived in, it was a little bit inconvenient to go out alone as a female. The local kids would throw stones at you and you could not enter shops if you were wearing shorts.

Erbai: How long did you stay at Akaba?

Cherry: Almost a year. The main reason we left was that we could not find babysitters there. The babysitters there are all Philippine and we could not afford them, so we decided to move to where they come from. We moved to Boracay Island and lived there for two years, then moved to Bohol Island.

Erbai: Was there any students which left you a deep impression?

Cherry: I taught a granny who was 74 years old and came from Taiwan. Two grandsons of her who were seventeen or eighteen years old came to recreational dive and she decided to join them when she found it looked interesting. Her psychological quality and sports ability under the water was surprisingly good compared to people of her age. After she finished the scuba divers lesson happily, she went diving with her family delightfully. Her two grandsons would carry her equipment whenever she went to dive. They board the ship after their final dive and when granny removed her second stage, she accidentally removed her artificial tooth as well and the artificial tooth fell in the sea, everybody laughed happily for a long time.

Erbai: How old can a child learn diving? How old should an elderly stop diving? Are there any rules about it?

Cherry: Children who are above eight years old can try scuba diving. Children who are over ten years old can try teenager open water lesson. There is no age limit as long as you are healthy.

Erbai: Have you met any students who brought changes in your idea and life?

Cherry: I have two friends who are well-known in the mountain climbing circle, Peng Zhou, and Shuang Li. Teaching them was very pleasant because there are many similarities between outdoor sports. Teaching them inspired me to think more about the way I teach. Later on, we become good friends, and I go climbing and diving with them sometimes.

Erbai: I see that you post movie reviews on Douban frequently. I guess you really like movies. What kind of influence does film have on your life?

Cherry: I really love watching movies, I have been watching movies for twenty years, and every good film influences me. Movies expand the broadness of life like traveling. When you see there are many different people in this world living in different ways, it is easier to accept difference. But I dont travel, I move.

Erbai: Can you talk about your opinion on environmental protection and love marine action?

Cherry: My attitude is rather mild on the issue of environmental protection. I think more impoverished regions such as countries like Philippine, the things they do to stay full are understandable and acceptable. Some developed countries ask poor people who are struggling to keep warm and fed to settle for being poor and protect the environment is unacceptable to me. If they really want to help them, they should do things that can improve the environment and create job opportunities in the environmental protection industry. If the locals have new ways to earn money, they wont go fishing. But for other reasons that cause extinction and massive ecological damage is intolerable such as shark wings, giant clams, and hawksbill sea turtle. Most of the diving tutors here do what they can do to protect the ocean, for example, they would clean the garbage and nets under the sea. Because some of our guests come from other places, our arrival will cause a certain influence on the environment. We hope it is a positive influence, at least partially positive impact to the sea and the country we stay in.

Erbai: Now diving is more and more popular, is there anything you want to say to the new divers or divers who are going to join?

Cherry: Diving is a sport that can accompany you your whole life. I have seen many married couples who are sixty or seventy years old. They started diving together when they were young and they keep diving together until their hair is gray. After every lesson, I would tell my students two pieces of advice. I want to share them with everyone.

First, take it easy, dont rush into anything. I often hear people ask that what can they see here as if diving is not fun when they cant see any whale shark or manta. The world is a big space and there are many diving spots. The interest in diving has many layers, and you have to feel it slowly. There is no need to dive all the top diving spots in a hurry, otherwise, where are you going to dive later?

Second, the corals around the world have decayed fifty percent in the last thirty years. A quarter species of sharks are on the endangered species list. If you still want to dive after twenty years, please try to do nice things to the environment.

Due to the length of the article, the talk with Cherry will end here. Her story is much more than this. She has a unique perspective on many things. She is like the places she moved to and the movies she saw. Her skin color shows that she is always under the sun and swims in a lot of seas.

There are numerous ways of living, there is not a right way or wrong way. Many people underestimate their power to choose. No matter what, happy or unhappy is the result of ones own choice, and only one can know how it feels. A large number of people are born with the dreams to become a hero. How many try to be their own heroes?
