Wuyi Mountain is one of China’s most famous ten mountains; it has a breathtaking view and profound cultural heritage. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of culture and nature. Cai Shangsi, a renowned historian and expert in the history of Chinese ideas,  said, “Eastern Zhou has Confucius, Southern Song has Zhu Xi, but the ancient Chinese culture has Mount Tai and Wuyi!”

“Next Stop” is a community to pursue the good life through organizing a series of “five beautiful ( good wine, delicious food, breathtaking scenery, beautiful people and wonderful writing) activities” to enjoy life, build connections, gain friendships and improve ourselves with the purpose of “meeting goodness,”

If the “Next Stop” is going to Wuyi Mountain, we must go to Hezhang Rock. Yang Xiaowen, the founder of this community, had been thinking about it.

In the late spring, a group of us, who had never met before but had the same spirit, set off from Beijing, Shandong, and other places, and gathered in Wuyi Mountain, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of culture and nature, to start a five-day and four-night study tour.

In the high-speed rail trains and cabins, everyone’ had their own different reveries about Wuyi Mountain in their minds. In the afternoon, our first stop after arriving in Wuyi Mountain was to visit the original Wuyi Mountain cliff tea factory——Wentianfeng Tea Industry.

聽周建龍老總講述武夷山岩茶歷史

There is no gorgeous factory, but there is an intoxicating yard full of tea fragrance. There is no deliberate display, only a friendly host here with a native voice and can tell the story of cliff tea from planting and picking to processing and production!

The host introduced while skillfully making different flavors of cliff tea. For a moment, the leaves that I had just seen had transformed into many different kinds of elves, and the aroma that permeated the air was intoxicating!

We had breakfast at Wangfeng Garden Hotel’s Chinese Restaurant, then we entered the Wuyi Mountain and visited Tianyou Peak. Xu Xiake commented on Tisnyou Peak that “this peak is not close to the river, but it has the beauty of Nine-bend Stream, this should be the number one peak.”

Wuyi Mountain was included in the World Heritage List in December 1999 and is known as “World Cultural and Natural Heritage,” “the starting point of the Ten Thousand Mile Tea Road,” and “the cradle of Zhuxi’s philosophy.” When we came to Tianyou Peak, we couldn’t help but exclaim: “This rock is massive!”

As Asia’s largest monolithic mountain, although the Tianyou Peak is steep, the drop of its stairs is small, so you can always climb slowly. As long as you keep breathing deeply, you can easily reach the top. We saw the waterfalls that only appear on rainy days on the way up.

Here rained a lot during the beginning of May, so it was a pleasure to climb Tianyou Peak. After arriving at the top of the mountain, we saw the Tianyou Pavilion dedicated to the master of health, the protagonist of a bizarre story - Peng Zu. Stopping in front of the statue of Peng Zu, visitors passing by would offer incense to pay respect and then take a seat in the adjacent tea pavilion to chat about the legendary story of this ancestor!

It was the way down the mountain after passing through Tianyou Pavilion. The path was easy to walk, and along the way, we could see the words carved on the cliff walls by the ancients, and several sisters lined up and stood in front of the rock for a group photo. After we went down the mountain, we looked back at the single-sided wall of Tianyou Peak, which was so tall that we couldn’t see the top; it was so shocking. And the four big words on the rock wall, “As Steep As A Wall,” also looked very appropriate, and it was an excellent place to take photos!

攀登天遊峰

After we left the scenic spot, we went to have lunch in a farmer’s yard and toured A Strip Of Sky.

When you visit Wuyi Mountain, you must walk through A Strip Of Sky,  a great wonder. After experiencing it personally, I can understand the thrill and magic. A huge stone fell from the sky, had a crack, and the sand and gravel below the stone were not solid enough, and the gap became bigger and bigger after years of wind and rain and formed this magical natural landscape.

一線天

Wuyi Mountain’s landscape architects carved the stone steps that are not steep in the crack and also installed LED lights near the bottom of the feet. So that we tourists can enjoy climbing the dark stone crack. But you have to be thin enough to pass through A Strip Of Sky because the narrowest place is only thirty centimeters, you have to pass it facing the wall with the backpack on your shoulder, remember to lose some weight before you go there.

We had some time after we toured A Strip Of Sky, we decided to go to Dawang Peak and Maiden Peak.

大王峰下戲水

The large-scale lacquer painting “Wuyi Spring” in Fujian Hall of the Great Hall of the People is known as the most photographed contemporary lacquer painting on CCTV, which mainly expresses the beauty of Wuyi Mountain’s Dawang Peak and the Maiden Peak.

The weather was beautiful, the sky was clear, and everyone was so lucky that they could take as many pictures as they wanted. Wenyu, Haixia, Sister Xiu, and other members were excited; they even took off their shoes and ran into the Nine-bend Stream to play in the water!

After dinner, we watched “Impression of Da Hong Pao,” written and directed by Zhang Yimou, for an in-depth experience of Wuyi Mountain tea culture. Back at the hotel, Mr. Zhou from Wentianfeng Tea Industry sent six bags of Wuyi cliff tea to each group member for us to experience. Thank you, Mr. Zhou, for being so thoughtful! I was intoxicated by watching Da Hong Pao and drunk drinking Dahongpao!

May 9th

Due to the fear of weather changes, we decided to advance our rafting trip among the Nine-bend Stream to the following day. Before coming to Wuyi Mountain, some members searched out Zhu Xi’s Song of Nine-bend Stream, thinking about sitting on a bamboo raft, being in the mountains, and listening to the fisher reciting the beautiful texts on the banks of the stream while looking at the mountain scenery on the shore. We have to admire the extraordinary beauty of nature!

九曲溪漂流

船工小哥的解說棒極了

As the boat traveled to the fifth bend, we enjoyed the mysterious boat coffin culture of Wuyi Mountain. Rafting among Nine-bend Stream is definitely different from other places, and this rafting is unforgettable for a lifetime.

After disembarking, we visited the Wuyi Palace and Song Street, imitating Song architecture from over a thousand years ago.

遊覽宋街

In the afternoon, we visited Jiulongke and saw the six mysterious ancient tea trees of Dahongpao.

Wuyi cliff tea is a traditional Chinese tea, and it is the oolong tea with cliff flavor (cliff flower fragrance) quality, produced in the north of Fujian Province, around the Wuyi Mountains, which is the most beautiful area in the southeast. Tea trees grow in the rock crevices. If you have not been to the three pits and two streams, how can you judge the Wuyi rock tea!

感受武夷山的茶文化

The highlight of the third day came in the evening. It was Mother’s Day, and most of the participants of the trip were women. “Next Stop” specially prepared a big cake for all female members, and many of them got choked up when they sang “Mama’s Kiss” together.

May 10th

Since some members were going to leave, we decided to visit the Xiamei Ancient Dwellings in the morning. After taking those who left early to the airport and the high-speed railway station, the rest of the members went to the “number one stone cave of Jiangnan” at Hezhang Rock and met with the legendary master Shibenyuan.

Xiamei is the starting point of the Ten Thousand Mile Tea Road, and the Xiamei Ancient Dwellings are part of the Wuyi Mountain World Cultural Heritage Site of Fujian Province.

下梅古民居

We didn’t have much time to visit the Xiamei Ancient Dwellings because we had to save time to go to the highlight of the tour, the Hezhang Rock. The Hezhang Rock Scenic Spot is in Shunchang, Fujian, about an hour or so drive from Wuyi Mountain.

合掌岩

When we went to Hezhang Rock, we were warmly welcomed by Benyuan, and our companions were asking questions from time to time, and we felt the great wisdom of the master during our conversation. In the end, Benyuan sent each family a piece of “Fu” calligraphy.

Members of the Next Stop spent wonderful five days and four nights during the Wuyi Mountain trip, and Sima Feiyan exclaimed: “Drinking three or four years of Dahongpao cliff tea, Wuyi cliff tea is a must for home gourmets and long outdoor rides. During this trip, we have tasted good tea, enjoyed the beautiful scenery, met so many wonderful people, and it was really worthwhile!”
